I would like to voice my appreciation to councillor Glenn Smith (Con, Covingham/Nythe ) for his support for the removal of the speed humps in Covingham. This includes St Paul's Drive, I hope.
I read with interest a letter from S Moore who apparently is delighted with the humps. S Moore then goes on to say that since the traffic calming measures have been introduced it has made Merlin Way a lot safer. Can I point out that there are no humps in Merlin Way, just two roundabouts which, according to S Moore, has achieved the purpose. I can only conclude this reiterates the point that there is indeed no requirement for speed humps.
I constantly see vehicles trying to go through humps in the middle of the road, and have witnessed times when other vehicles have had to swerve out of the way of oncoming cars who for some reason think its better to drive down the middle of the road.
From a practical point of view the damage they cause to our already expensive vehicles is undeniable. Inside tyre wear, shock absorber damage, cars bottoming out and damaged oil sumps etc.
The measures carried out in Merlin Way, as stated by S Moore, have worked without speed humps.
They are a menace, they cause damage, they cause drivers to behave abnormally. If the ambulance service is to be believed they may even cost lives. Please get rid of them now.
