Ref. 28181-71NO one can accuse David and Janice Vowles of not knowing the meaning of hard work.
For more than 20 years, the couple have been getting up at the crack of dawn to ensure that the people of Highworth get their morning papers delivered in time for breakfast.
The pair are so dedicated to the business - Woodbridge's news-agents in Highworth - that apart from Christmas Day, they have not taken a day off for seven years.
But after 21 years, the couple have decided to retire, and the shop is closing on Saturday after five decades.
The premises in High Street, Highworth have been sold.
The new owner plans to turn it into residential accommodation.
David, 64, said: "We've really enjoyed it here and we've given it a good run.
"But 21 years is enough and we want a break.
"We had a weekend away earlier this month, but that was the first break in seven years.
"In that time we've had half a day off for my son's graduation and we took half days off for the funeral of my wife's mother and father.
"It's a very demanding job, but we enjoy it and will miss our customers very much."
The couple are moving to Stratton St Margaret, and plan to get part-time jobs and enjoy plenty of holidays.
They both grew up in the Highworth area and took over the business from Janice's uncle, Bernard Woodbridge.
Before taking on the shop, they ran a pub in Weston-super-Mare.
The shop has an army of 32 delivery boys and girls, who deliver newspapers - including the Evening Advertiser - to 360 homes.
Every day, the couple's alarm clock rings at 5am and the shop is open soon after.
The first job of the day is to sort out the papers ready for the deliveries. The boys and girls come in at 7am.
In spite of the early start, paper boy Quinton Rose, 16, of Station Road, Highworth, will miss his round.
He said: "I have to get up at 6am for my morning round, and I do another one after college finishes.
"I am going to miss the job, David and Janice are really good to work for."
Regular customer Irene Haworth, of Edencroft, Highworth, is one of many local residents who will miss the shop.
She said: "I'm very sorry they're leaving, I always buy my papers and stationery here.
"I have enjoyed their friendship, and you always get good service."
