A NEW Scout hut is a step closer to becoming a reality for the 2nd Bulford St Leonard's Scout Group.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the group have raised £2,300 towards the final sum needed, by taking part in a sponsored walk at Moors Valley and organising a firework display in November.

The current hut is in a bad state of repair. So far, the group has collected £25,000 towards a replacement, but nearly £40,000 is needed for work to begin.

Treasurer for the group Sheila Wood said: "We had hoped that, with funding from the Lottery and other charitable organisations, we might have been able to start work early in 2004.

"Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful in our bids so far, due to the pressure of requests for funding. As a result, we have had to scale back the plans for our 'ideal' hut, in the hope that we can start replacing the building more quickly.

"We have a great group, committed leaders and a lovely site that the children can use.

"All we need is a new hut to make it complete."
