LIKE the rest of the local community I am slowly coming to terms with the sad loss of David Hemmings.
I had got to know David a few years ago when he first moved here, as a member of a rival pub quiz team on a Sunday night.
I found him to be very friendly, warm and caring and a superb quiz adversary!
What struck me is that he was very down to earth with no airs or graces of any kind and never criticised his profession or the actors.
I did jokingly remind him of his
portrayal of Alfred the Great, his
comment was "that's the nearest I'll ever get to being a royal!"
He was always very cheerful when he came into our supermarket and liked to use Christian names when asking for anything.
Although he was away a lot in the last couple of years, he did genuinely love Calne and its people and
together with his charming wife Lucy, enjoyed being involved with events in the local community.
I hope Lucy will decide to stay in Calne, she is very much part of the town, as he was.
David will be sadly missed, it will be right and proper if he is
remembered in some way.
