PUPILS at Seend Primary School experienced extreme culture shock last week when they returned to Victorian times for a day.
Following a visit to the Victorian school at Sevington, near Grittleton, staff arranged for the children to experience the teaching they would have received over 100 years ago.
They had to sit up straight, not speak until spoken to and learn to use pens with nibs.
They did arithmetic working in pre-decimal currency involving 12 pennies to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. The girls learned to polish brass, which they would have to know if they were going into domestic service, the most likely area of employment for country girls in those days.
Headteacher Christine Ramsay said: "They all really enjoyed it, although they wouldn't want to do it every day."
