Ref. 28229-17TOMORROW sees the wedding anniversary of a couple whose 60 years of blissful marriage has seen them live in some of the most exotic and dangerous places in the world.

Peter and Joy Ells, who live in Deansfield, Cricklade, met in Egypt in 1942.

Peter, now 85, was serving as a captain with the Royal Corps of Signals, while Joy, now 79, whose father was director general of Egyptian civil aviation industry, had spent much of her life there.

Joy was working for the British military when the two met. The couple were married in Maadi, near Cairo.

Shortly after their marriage, Peter was posted to India and later Iraq and Burma, and Joy obtained transfers in order to be with him.

After the Second World War, Peter joined the colonial civil service, and the two lived in every island of the West Indies during a period when many gained their independence.

Later, they lived in Africa, where Peter served in Zambia and Uganda during the latter country's period under the murderous rule of Idi Amin .

They have two daughters, two sons, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Returning to England in 1973 to be nearer their elderly parents, they settled first in Eastbourne, then moved to Cricklade in 1999 to be nearer members of their family.

And their recipe for so many years of happy marriage?

Joy said: "There should be give and take, you should have stickability and also a loving family."

Peter added: "The important thing is to meet halfway."
