POLICE in Wiltshire have been handed almost £70,000 to recruit an extra 75 part-time bobbies.
The Government has stepped in with the cash after a slump in the number of special constables.
Figures published in March this year showed the county had 154 specials, 30 fewer than in 1999.
Now £69,950 will be spent to recruit dedicated staff and trainers to up the number of special constables and stop others leaving the force.
Police will be expected to recruit a minimum of 75 additional Special Constables over the next three years in exchange for the cash.
Chief Superintendent Stuart Richardson, the head of personnel and recruiting for the force said: "The Wiltshire Constabulary welcomes the support provided to enhance our recruitment of Special Constables.
"They provide a support for regular police officers, enhance the visible presence of officers in our communities and assist in the reduction of crime and disorder.
"In addition, the ability to enhance the training provided to Special Constables will increase further the opportunity to deploy their time and skills to a wider range of policing activities."
All 43 of the nation's police forces have been set a similar target and given extra money. They will be holding recruitment days in February.
