A FAMILY-run fruit and veg business transformed by a BBC television show is recommending the makeover to other struggling companies.

George Brown & Sons, based in Trowbridge, featured on BBC2's I'll Show Them Who's Boss and is now a thriving business with more customers and healthy profits.

The 119-year-old firm was forced to implement radical changes recommended by industry experts.

Now the BBC is launching another search for a west Wiltshire family-run business to take part in a third series of the show.

The series involves business expert Gerry Robinson recommending drastic changes to family-run companies facing problems.

Lorraine Lowrie, the firm's financial director, said: "Before Gerry Robinson came in we had committees to decide everything we did and it took ages.

"We had 17 members of the Brown family working here and the company was based on that proud heritage but maybe we weren't doing things properly.

"The changes have really helped our profits and we are more focused. Now everyone knows where we are and the business is going in the right direction."

Following advice the two brothers running George Brown & Sons transferred power to fourth generation grandson Simon Brown.

During the makeover, the family created a sales team, increased the number of customers, refitted the office and now have new vans and uniforms.

Of the four companies who took part in the first series George Brown & Sons was the only one which took the changes on board.

Mrs Lowrie said: "My great-grandfather was an entrepreneur and would have liked the way we have adapted.

"But we wouldn't have been able to develop like this without the TV show now we have a family business to be proud of.

"We would definitely recommend other struggling family firms take part in the programme."

Since filming the show, George Brown & Sons has now delivered increased turnover and profits for two years in a row.

The second series of I'll Show Them Who's Boss is currently being filmed but TV bosses are searching for businesses to take part in the third series which will be filmed next year.

To be involved the business must have at least two family members in key roles and have a turnover of more than £1m. The firm should be facing a problem or struggle.
