A new crisis team, to help people suffering severe mental distress becomes fully operational in Swindon on Monday.

It is one of three new mental health teams in Wiltshire, created by the Swindon, West Wiltshire, Kennet and North Wiltshire Primary Care Trusts along with Swindon Borough and Wiltshire County councils.

"Our new teams will have a significant impact on the services that we offer to local people," said Wiltshire and Swindon Mental Health Services director Malcolm Sinclair.

The creation of the crisis units is aimed at enabling prompt assessment of people suffering severe mental distress and will offer intensive home treatment as an alternative to hospital admission.

The Swindon unit is based at Sandalwood Court in Stratton. It consists of specially trained staff, including doctors, nurses and social workers, will be on call daily.
