MORE missed chances denied Steve White the first win of his managerial career but Chippenham's gutsy 1-1 draw at Havant & Waterlooville was enough to lift them off the foot of the Premier Division.
After Charlie Griffin (pictured) had cancelled out David Town's stunning opener, the Bluebirds had the openings to upset the high-flying Hawks but some wayward finishing prevented White's men from collecting maximum points.
The hosts started strongly, with Mark Hervin having to save Neil Champion's looping effort and Chris Ferrett having a shot cleared off the line.
Chippenham then enjoyed a period of dominance as Griffin collected Ellis Wilmot's free-kick six yards out but was frustrated by a last-ditch Alec Mason tackle.
Adie Mings then fired wide with only Howells to beat before Havant took the lead against the run of play.
James Taylor teed up Town and his first-time effort from 30 yards flew in via the underside of the bar.
The Bluebirds hit back in first-half stoppage time when Nathan Edwards crossed from the left and Griffin powered home a header.
White's troops proceeded to enjoy the better of the second half.
Griffin, despite his earlier strike, continues to lack confidence in front of goal, missing a hat-trick of good chances including two point-blank headers from Sam Allison crosses.
Havant were forced to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after Taylor was carried off with a foot injury, but the Bluebirds were unable to make the extra body count.
A point was good enough to lift Chippenham from the foot of the table though at the expense of arch rivals Bath City.
Chippenham: Hervin, Wilmot, Thorne, Herring, Robertson, Gould, Edwards, O'Halloran, Mings, Griffin, Allison.
