HIGHWORTH collected an overdue victory to keep their Hellenic Premier Division title dreams alive.
Matt Saye climbed off the bench with half an hour to inspire John Fisher's men to a 2-0 home win over Tuffley the club's first success in six outings.
Another frustrating afternoon was in the offing until Fisher introduced Saye to partner Pete Macklin in attack and the pair combined to break down Tuffley's stubborn rearguard.
Macklin broke the deadlock with a cool finish after Saye had won the ball and played in his strike partner.
Macklin then returned the favour by crossing for Saye to head home late on.
With leaders Didcot losing 1-0 at home to Bishops Cleeve, Highworth closed the gap to 10 points with a game in hand.
Manager Fisher said: "That's not the best we've played but it was important to start winning again and it was nice to see the forwards on the scoresheet.
"With Didcot losing we are back in it and after the next three games we will know where we stand."
Highworth entertain Didcot tomorrow night in a game Fisher's side cannot afford to lose.
Elsewhere in the top flight, depleted Wootton Bassett slipped to a 2-1 defeat at fellow strugglers Pegasus Juniors.
Pete Yeardley's suspension-hit side had taken the lead three minutes before the interval when
Nathan Hall's wind-assisted corner sailed over the head of Pegasus keeper Scott Hodgetts and into the back of the net.
The hosts were back on level terms after 62 minutes as Andy Hallett turned a Gavin Stone cross past his own keeper.
Robert Lawrie hit the winner five minutes later when he blasted into the roof of the net after Richard Gee cleared two shots off the line.
Bassett had a chance to come back three minutes from time when substitute Neil Bridges was one-on-one with Hodgetts but his shot was brilliantly palmed away.
Fairford were also beaten on the road, losing at Hungerford for the second Saturday in a row.
A 3-0 Premier Division defeat followed a 2-0 League Cup loss the previous weekend. Darren Howell did most of the damage with a brace for the home side.
Pewsey Vale's game with Gloucester United was called off due to the weather.
