Ref. 28297-6IT WAS one of the proudest moments of Keith Cozens' life - and he dedicated it to his father who couldn't be with him because of a recent stroke.
For the lifelong Plymouth Argyle fan, the honour of leading his team into battle against Swindon Town as their mascot is something he will never forget.
And he was looking forward to sharing the experience with his father, Colwyn, who encouraged him to support Argyle as a boy.
Sadly, Colwyn is in hospital following a stroke, but he was firmly in Keith's mind as he walked down the tunnel and on to the pitch to the roar of a 10,000-strong crowd.
The chance to become a mascot for the day was arranged to celebrate Keith's 20-year teaching career at Even Swindon Junior School.
Sitting in the stands, cheering on their headteacher, were 50 Even Swindon pupils, several colleagues and parents and Keith's wife, Patsy.
Before getting changed into his Argyle kit, Keith, 54, got to meet the team and their manager, Paul Sturrock.
Keith, from Castle Eaton, said: "I have been an Argyle fan since 1958, so this has meant a great deal to me.
"It was my father who introduced me to them.
"I grew up in Cornwall, and Plymouth was the nearest team
"It would have been very special if dad could have been here today."
The treat was organised by Keith's work colleagues.
Teacher Wayne Smith said: "This seemed like an ideal way to thank Keith for his 20 years of hard work.
"This way we could also share the celebration with the community of Swindon."
Keith's pupils, who were invited to watch Saturday's game for free by Swindon Town, also enjoyed the day.
Shaun James, 10, said: "I'm a massive Swindon Town fan, but I don't mind having a headteacher who supports Plymouth, they're a good team.
"I was a mascot to Swindon two weeks ago.
"It was really funny to see him."
Nathan Sarahs, 10, said: "I normally think of Mr Cozens taking assemblies and stuff, so it was really weird seeing him as a mascot"
Keith's big day ended in joy when his team snatched a last minute goal to win 3-2.
n The match went off without much trouble, just three arrests, all for being drunk and incapable.
