Controversial plans to close Monkton Hill in Chippenham to through traffic will come before Wiltshire County Council's Regulatory Committee in January.
Wiltshire County Council met a storm of protest when they proposed to close the road to make it a safer route for pedestrians walking from the town centre to Chippenham station.
Residents on the Monkton Park estate were concerned the closure of the road could mean the loss of an emergency route into the estate and protested to the county council.
A spokesman for the county council said the plans would be discussed at the January meeting and a decision made.
However a letter from county council leader Jane Scott to one of the protesters said the report to the committee would recommend the closure should not be progressed because of the level of opposition.
"Given the merits of improving pedestrian and cycle links from the station to the town centre, it is likely that an alternative scheme that continues to allow through motor vehicle access on Monkton Hill will be progressed in the New Year," she said.
