A TASTE of festive spirit was enjoyed by all on Friday as mince pies and mulled wine were served to people enjoying late night shopping in Malmesbury.
The High Street was closed to traffic and decked out with Christmas lights, tinsel and a large Christmas tree at the Market Cross.
Santa also made an early appearance giving out goody packs to youngsters from his grotto.
Festive music was played by the Salvation Army, the Athelstan Players and Malmesbury Concert Band.
Shops stayed open until 9pm and most reported a brisk trade in what has become a traditional festive event.
Chairman of Malmesbury Chamber of Commerce Alan Woodward said it had been a good evening.
He said: "I think it went well. Nearly 200 children saw Father Christmas. The High Street looked brilliant with the lights up and the tree up as well."
Malmesbury Wholefoods at Abbey Row was awarded first prize in the shop window competition.
Stuart Richmond of Bristol Street said: "I am surprised by how many people are here, more than last year.
"Everyone is in a very jovial mood and enjoying themselves."
Mother-of-four Gill Hitchings, 34, of Gloucester Street said: "We are really enjoying it, it is brilliant. I think the High Street looks lovely, very Christmassy, and there is a really good atmosphere and the children have enjoyed it. I think it is one of the best years we have had."
