JUST a few months ago we were told it could not be done. Wiltshire County Council announced that despite a huge number of accidents on the A4 between Calne and Chippenham it could not bring in any safety measures.
But we were not prepared to take 'no' for an answer and with wonderful backing from both towns, our petition to slow down traffic on the notorious stretch of road now has thousands of signatures.
And yesterday at county hall it was agreed it would be added to the list of jobs to be considered.
Now hopefully something will be done. But it is not a time to be complacent.
The county council has the petition. It knows that thousands of people think bringing in safety measures on this part of the road should be a priority.
It is not enough to just talk about it. Action is what is needed, sooner rather than later, if even more lives are not to be lost.
There have already been far too many accidents that have caused huge amounts of grief, trauma and injury.
The county has the experts to decide exactly what should be done and now is the time for that to happen.
