Adults protest. DA4572P6RUSH-HOUR traffic was brought to a standstill last week by Downton villagers protesting against heavy lorries and speeding motorists.

On a misty Wednesday morning, more than 50 people turned out with banners to show road users the strength of feeling within the community.

The village's narrow streets, which are usually jammed with traffic at that time, were taken over by residents, who walked from Lode Hill to the end of The Borough and back, while traffic waited to pass.

Protest co-ordinator Jenny Sells said she was pleased with the impact of the march, which had gained the attention of motorists.

"Most of the lorry drivers put their heads down and did not really look at us," she said.

"But about 50 per cent of car drivers wound down their windows and said they supported us, or gave us the thumbs-up."

Villagers have already carried out traffic surveys and contacted Salisbury district and Wiltshire county councils, asking for weight restrictions for lorries to be applied to the B3080.

They have also requested speed cameras and traffic-calming measures, and are pushing for a 20mph speed zone for the village.
