Family and friends mourned the loss of actor David Hemmings at a quiet funeral service in St Mary's Church, Calne, yesterday.

Among those who travelled to the town to say farewell to the 1960s' film icon was actor Robert Powell, star of the Thirty-Nine Steps remake film and the TV spoof, The Detectives.

Mr Hemmings died of a heart attack on December 3 while filming in Romania. His widow Lucy was with him when he died.

Outside the church yesterday, a bouquet of roses and lilies was laid by five of Mr Hemming's children.

The tribute read: "The years we spent away from each other never changed the love we had for you. We remember you in the good moments when your kindness and amazing spirit made you the best father we could ask for. We are proud to be your children and will love you forever. Nolan, George, Edward, Charlotte and William."

A memorial service will be held in London in the New Year for Mr Hemming's wider circle of friends.

Mr Hemmings, who moved to Calne from London five years ago, was most famous for his lead role in 1960s' film Blow-Up.
