CAMPAIGNERS calling for a reduction in the speed limit at Spin Hill, Market Lavington, won support from county councillors at a meeting yesterday.

Sharon Charity of Market Lavington presented a petition signed by 220 people calling for the speed limit to be reduced from 60 mph to 30 mph.

The regulatory committee agreed to put Spin Hill in a list of roads that it will consider in March 2004 as part of its annual speed limit review.

The committee also agreed to look at whether funding could be available to carry out traffic calming measures.

Mrs Charity told councillors at County Hall that Spin Hill was a dangerous road and the speed limit needed to be reduced to 30mph and there should be other traffic calming measures.

She said: "Reducing the speed limit to 30 mph would be a simple first step to making Spin Hill safer and reducing the unacceptable danger to children, elderly and vulnerable people posed by de-restricted traffic and the lack of pedestrian facilities."

She started the petition following the death of Market Lavington resident Sharon Oliver in a car crash at Spin Hill in April this year.

Market Lavington Parish Council has agreed to part-fund the cost of reducing the speed limit.

Mrs Charity said she was pleased at the support expressed by county councillors.
