Veteran actor George Baker who played television sleuth Inspector Wexford has helped launch a new course for elderly drivers.
Mr Baker, 72, best known for his role as the detective in the popular Ruth Rendell mysteries, said he has taken the course for over-70s motorists himself.
The course is being run by the Road Safety Unit at Wiltshire County Council.
Father of five and grandfather of eight Mr Baker, who lives near Devizes, said: "Having taken the test myself I can honestly say there are many benefits to this scheme.
"I have been driving for 54 years and find the car a handy way to get about Wiltshire.''
The Age Concern-backed course organisers say people aged over 70 have the second highest risk of having an accident after under 24-year-olds.
It is expected that many people taking part will be referred by a doctor, although drivers will be able to apply directly for themselves.
The driving assessor will then accompany the driver to observe their driving and make recommendations about how they can improve their technique. They will also suggest alternative routes to avoid difficult junctions and roundabouts.
Alternative forms of transport will be discussed and explored and a standard eye test will also form part of the course.
Mr Baker, who lives with wife Louie Ramsay, is a patron of the Friends of Swindon Arts Centre in Devizes Road.
The course costs £18.50. To find out more call 01225 713000.
