TETBURY scored seven tries as they proved too strong for Cainscross in a local derby friendly.
Tetbury took the game to the home side from the whistle and were rewarded after ten minutes when winger Dan Webber was put free by Ben Porter to score beneath the posts. A second try followed as scrum-half Lewis Prosser left the Cainscross defence flat-footed with his turn of pace to score in the corner. The away side began to show their dominance in both set play and in the loose. Tetbury made break after break, with debutant South African full-back Brendan Hoke causing havoc on the counter-attack, but had to settle for a 12-0 half-time lead.
Playing down the not-insignificant slope in the second half, Tetbury began slowly and indiscipline from a penalty allowed the Cainscross pack to power over.
This proved a wake-up call and Tetbury began to play some superb running rugby. The front row of Ray Fletcher, Jon Grayling and Hayden Biggs put their opposition under immense pressure and slowly the home pack were ground down. Tetbury soon increased their lead when a through-kick fell unkindly for the Cainscross full back, and in-form fly-half Will Dyer collected the ball on the bounce to sprint beneath the posts.
The try of the match involved both South African debutants, Hoke and flanker Arthur Hewitt.
The ball passed through half-a-dozen sets of hands, with a lovely final off-load from Hewitt to allow Hoke to cross. The home side, however, refused to lie down and pulled a score back, but tough tackling from Angelo Broadhurst and Pete Roberts prevented the Tetbury line from being breached again.
Tetbury's overall dominance resulted in further tries from Ben Sargeant, Will Dyer and a bullocking solo run from captain and No.8 Brian Goldstone sealed the victory. Pete Roberts finished with 3 from 7 goals.
Tetbury entertain league leaders Kingswood on Saturday.
