With reference to the article that appeared on December 11 entitled "Tunnel is planned under M4 motorway", this £4m, 70-metre tunnel will take the road out of Swindon rather than linking the Front Garden with Swindon.

It would allow more traffic to enter Swindon and end up at Croft Road. The link to Wootton Bassett Road will be bus-only in peak hours.

It is recognised that there will be a need for a link to Swindon across the railway, and when the question was asked why the money is proposed to be spent on the M4 tunnel rather than the rail route, the answer came, "that will be paid for by future development south of the Front Garden."

Is the borough council more

concerned with outward expansion than with sustainable planning and maintaining and enhancing the quality of life for existing and future residents?
