STEVE White believes Bluebirds striker Charlie Griffin is showing the form that earned him a £10,000 move to Swindon Town in 1998.

The Chippenham manager has been impressed with Griffin's contribution since taking charge at the club three weeks ago and admits he is not surprised Jimmy Quinn paid all that money to take him to the County Ground.

The striker's professional career turned sour after a couple of years at Swindon and he moved back to Hardenhuish, via Woking, in 2002.

Griffin, 24, scored his sixth goal of the season in Chippenham's 1-1 draw with Havant and Waterlooville and it was his first since White's appointment.

White said: "Charlie Griffin played exceptionally well on Saturday as he had done in the previous game.

"People may say that things haven't been going for him front of goal but as far as I am concerned he is playing really well for us.

"If players are getting into position and getting shots in at goal then I can't ask for much more.

He continued: "On Saturday he drilled three shots across the face of goal and they narrowly went wide. He was very unlucky not to score more.

"His fitness levels are at a very high level and I can now see why Jimmy Quinn took him to Swindon a few years ago.

"I am very pleased with him and he is an important player for us."

White has yet to win his first league game as manager of Chippenham Town but he believes things are looking up.

He said: "We did well on Saturday. I think we were well worthy of a point and that maybe we could have or even should have got all three points.

"We have moved off the bottom which is a good start but there is still plenty to do. This is just the beginning, one or two new faces have come in to make good competition for places.

"We have now got 16 or 17 bodies on the training pitch which is a lot better than it has been.

"I am always keen to bring in players that are better than what we have got but I will not sign players for the sake of it. I do not want run-of-the-mill players."

Had Chippenham finished all the chances they have created in the last couple of weeks their league position would be looking a lot healthier and White admits it is time to start turning the draws into wins.

He said: "Things are definitely looking up. The spirit is a lot better and I am delighted with how things are going.

"We just need to turn these draws into wins.

"I feel we have deserved to win our last two games and I don't think the neutral spectator could disagree with me, but we need to start winning games."

White also praised the performance of Ian Herring, who was making his debut on Saturday after signing for a month loan from Swindon Town.
