A LOCAL hero hailed for years of supporting children with special needs opened a new Tesco Express store in Trowbridge on Monday.

Beryl Morris, of Paxcroft Way, is a volunteer for pre-school Stepping Stones and was nominated as a Local Hero after a search in the Wiltshire Times.

Retired Mrs Morris was presented with £500 for children at Stepping Stones and got the chance to cut the ribbon at the new store on Eastbourne Road.

Nominating her for the award, Debbie Wickham said: "She is a ray of sunshine always jolly and smiling. She is a tremendous role model for woman of all ages and I'm sure many people in Trowbridge would want to thank her for warm and generous spirit."

Dawn Dredge, store manager, said: "As soon as we read the letter nominating Beryl we knew we had found our Local Hero and we are delighted that she has agreed to open our new store."

The new store is open from 6am-11pm seven days a week.
