MANY people were shocked and some did not believe it when South Swindon MP Julia Drown referred to a catalogue of abuse cases against vulnerable and elderly people in Swindon
But those who doubted her should think again. Our story today about the police adult vulnerability unit leaves no room for denial that violent and psychological abuse by carers against people who depend on them is a significant problem in this town.
It beggars belief that much of this aggression is sexual.
We are fortunate that Wiltshire police have placed this situation in a prominent position on the priority list for use of resources, and that the job is handled sensitively by dedicated officers. That does not mean, however, that the rest of us can sit back and close our eyes. The police cannot see through closed front doors.
Neighbours carry a heavy responsibility if they suspect a housebound, helpless adult is being abused and do nothing about it.
The majority of carers are compassionate, committed people and we should not allow them to be let down by the minority. By keeping quiet we condemn a victim to continued misery and insecurity.
Report suspicions, if you have them, to the police.
