Ref. 28371-30Decorating the Christmas tree is no sweat for Reg Bolton. A bonsai grower for nearly 30 years, his miniatures don't tend to require much tinsel.
But even though they only stand a few inches tall, the trees can make a big impact during the festive period.
Reg, of the Swindon and District Bonsai Society, has decorated one of his trees for his grandchildren this year.
In previous years the club has held a Christmas competition to find the best decorated tree.
"People used to make up small parcels and decorate their trees with little bits of tinsel and miniature lights," said Reg, who lives in Stratton St Margaret. "They looked very attractive."
December is supposed to be a quiet period for bonsai growers, before re-potting begins from mid-January. But that does not mean the little trees should be forgotten.
In fact bonsai trees can make excellent Christmas gifts, said Reg. Beginners would be best starting with a Chinese Elm, which can be bought for as little as £9.
Reg has built up a collection of about 60 trees of 10 varieties over the years.
The Swindon and District Bonsai Society, which currently has 35 members, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at Coleview Community Centre in Nythe Road in Stratton Green. For more information about the society, call Reg on 01793 822470.
