CHRISTMAS means different things for different people and there are many ways to chose to spend the festive period. But for most of us Christmas is a time to spend with loved ones.

So it is heart-warming to see Ian and Debbie Robinson featured on our front page who can spend this special time together even though they are serving in Iraq.

The couple feared they would be apart for Christmas Day but a last minute change of plan by the RAF means they will be tucking into their turkey meal in Iraq where they are both posted.

They know what it is like to be apart after spending their first Christmas as a married couple in different continents.

But while most of us are relaxing at home with our loved ones, the emergency services are on standby with business as usual. Fire-fighters say despite the essential day at work the atmosphere is still festive. Ambulance crews can expect a busy time as people overindulge but many staff volunteer to work the Christmas shifts. Police have to cope with a rise in tension but are there in case they are needed.

On an upbeat note, the Bishop of Swindon, the Rt Rev Michael Doe says Christmas is good news for those who want to break out of their inward-looking lifestyle and he urges all of us to find our soul by taking part in community life.

And those who are not Christian say this is still a time to celebrate with the giving and receiving of presents.

Advertiser readers have proved this year that they are willing to give to their community with unconditional love.

They have raised a fantastic £211,232 since March for the Swindon cancer Appeal. Doing this they have proved they are willing to give up both time and money and have gone to extraordinary lengths to make the appeal to help cancer victims a success. We are sure that next year will see the same spirit of generosity among the people of Swindon.

Our annual Christmas Appeal has also brought the pounds rolling in so that community groups can have wonderful Christmas parties and celebrate with their friends.

A very happy Christmas to all our readers.
