BLUEBIRDS utility man Ellis Wilmot has been given the task of marshalling the right side of defence is enjoying the new challenge.

The 23-year-old, who signed for Chippenham Town from Mangotsfield in the close season, missed the start of the campaign because the was representing Great Britain Universities in the World Student Games in South Korea.

After his return he played across the midfield as well as at left-back but has now been switched to right-back and hopes to make the position his own.

Wilmot said: "It's just good to be playing wherever I play. There is nothing worse than sitting and watching from the bench.

"Playing at right-back is nothing new for me. I played there for the universities team and when I was growing up as well. The manager didn't really have a conversation about where he thought I would be best.

"He just said to me and Nathan Edwards before the Havant game that he was going to swap us over. He asked me to knock little balls into the front two and put Nathan on the wing because he is fitter and gets up and down a bit more than me."

Wilmot felt the change in tactics worked well and hopes he can now have a sustained run in the first team.

"I felt it worked quite well and I'd be happy if it stayed like that," he added. "I'm happy just being in the team but if that's where I'm going to play every week then so be it.

"I felt we have been playing better as a team recently. At Havant we should have come away with the three points.

"We defended better and restricted them to only three shots. The goal they got was a great effort from outside the area. At the same time we created a lot of chances and just need to start taking them now."

Wilmot knows he is going to have to fight to keep his place though with manager Steve White already bringing in new faces.

"Ssome of the injured lads are coming back so competition for places is getting stronger," he said.

"I was out for four weeks myself with a knee injury. It was frustrating because I wanted to play for Adie but we decided not to risk making it worse. In the end it was good timing because I was coming back just as the new manager was taking over.

"He's got the smiles back on our faces and we are enjoying our football."

Wilmot is now looking to help Chippenham get back in contention for promotion to the new Conference structure starting with a string of games during the festive period.

"The Christmas and New Year period is going to be busy and with us playing Weston-Super-Mare and Tiverton in derbies there will be a bit of added spice," he said.

"We keep saying we have been playing well and deserved to win. Now we need to turn those performances into three points."
