NEILL Archer, the newly appointed vicar of Malmesbury Abbey, is a former opera singer who has performed at world famous venues such as the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, London.
But Rev Archer, 42, is now more accustomed to delivering sermons, having been ordained a priest in 1999.
He said he was looking forward to taking up his new post at Easter, but admitted it would be a little different to his previous parish in Australia, which had miles of sandy beaches.
"I am greatly looking forward to being in
Malmesbury," he said.
"I was a professional musician for many years and when I saw the great tradition in music at the abbey, I was very excited to be offered the job.
He said it was a calling from God that prompted him to give up his life travelling the world and performing at top venues.
He said: "I loved being in the opera and music will always be a part of my life, but I heard a calling from God and now I have a real passion for the church.
"English National Opera told me that if being a priest didn't work out they'd have me back, but I do not miss that life, I love my job."
His decision to go into the church sparked considerable press coverage. He even was asked to sing a hymn for an American Cable Channel.
He said: "My children loved the attention, and it was positive publicity for the Church, but after a month or two it was good to settle down into parish ministry and learn my trade.
He met his Australian wife, Marilyn, a singing teacher, while performing in an opera in Ireland.
They have three daughters, Sally, 13, Rosie, 11, and Grace, eight.
Mr Archer said: "They are all really looking forward to moving. They are all quite musical and are excited about moving. Malmesbury is a beautiful town. I really enjoyed walking round."
With plans in the pipeline for a £2 million extension to the west wing of the abbey, it will be a challenging time for Mr Archer.
He said: "It is a great responsibility. My first responsibility will be to get know people.
"I think people will support the church financially when they see the church's vision.
"That will be my responsibility, to present God's vision."
