I read an article on the proposed M4 tunnel and the Southern Relief Road. I am dismayed by such proposals.
The already controversial Front Garden development cannot possibly gain any credence by such a scheme. All this proposal will do is create "rat runs" along Hay Lane , Wharf Road and Mill Lane . I pity the people who live on Croft Road as they already suffer from heavy traffic congestion during rush hour.
What can Swindon Borough Council be thinking of? Instead of integrating the Southern Development with the rest of Swindon, all this will do is encourage more traffic from outside to travel into Swindon, ending up in a huge bottle neck in Old Town, which, of course, will be further exacerbated by the link to Wootton Bassett Road being made bus only during peak hours.
If this borough has £4million to spend, may I suggest that the money would be better spent renewing and enhancing the existing urban area for the benefit of those that already live in Swindon.
There is so much work to be done before Swindon can think of further outward expansion, or for example its track record on education and social services.
I am wholeheartedly behind the comments of Coun Fionuala Foley and the CPRE and share their concerns.
