In August 2002 I wrote to North Wiltshire District Council and expressed my concern about wheelie bins being supplied to terraced houses and flats and houses with steps and the
eyesore that the bins would bring to many streets if they had to be left at the front of people's houses.
I received a response from the council which seemed to fully and adequately address my concerns, which was reiterated in the article on wheelie bins printed in the Gazette on December 11.
This stated that alternative arrangements would be made for flats, terraced houses and homes on slopes or with steps.
Black plastic sacks would be supplied to such properties.
However, it would appear that there is either a serious lack of communication or a flaw in management at our council, or the officers and
perhaps our councillors are guilty of a
deliberate deceit upon the folk of north Wiltshire.
Despite what had been stated previously and within days of that article on December 11, wheelie bins were being distributed around Chippenham including to most terraced houses and those with steps and to flats.
Many residents, within the last few days, were suddenly faced with no alternative but to place their unattractive wheelie bin close to their front door where it is on view to all who pass down their street.
Would the councillors tolerate the council's rubbish bins being sited adjacent to the main entrance of the council offices in Monkton Hill? I think not, but would ask them why, and why their answer should not be applied to everyone else in our district who likes to keep the main entrance and front of their property as attractive as possible.
I wonder whether our council cares for the district which it serves. Many of our streets are left strewn with litter and now everywhere you turn you will have an unattractive wheelie bin in view.
May I suggest that all who live in flats, terraced homes or with steps who have been supplied with a wheelie bin telephones the council on its wheelie bin hotline (01249) 706693 and asks the council to honour its
previous promise by replacing their unsightly wheelie bin with a supply of plastic sacks. Let those of us who do care try to keep our part of north Wiltshire a tidy and appealing place to live.
