ELDERLY drivers are being given the chance to take a refresher course to reduce road accidents.
Drivers aged over 70 are the second most likely age group to be involved in smashes after teenagers.
The exam, backed by Wiltshire County Council, involves car safety, discussing driving problems and an eye test.
Backing the Safer Driving with Age (SAGE) scheme is 72-year-old actor George Baker who plays Inspector Wexford.
He said: "Having taken the test myself I can honestly say there are many benefits to this scheme.
"Any scheme that helps you continue to use your car safely for longer has my support."
Drivers will discuss problems with an assessor who makes suggestions to improve technique.
Some drivers may be urged to give up the use of the car and there will be a standard eye test and medical.
Fleur de Rhe-Philipe, county council member for environment, transport and economic development, said: "For many people living in rural parts of Wiltshire the car is the only way to get to vital services such as shops and medical facilities. We want to help keep people driving for as long as it is safe for them to do so."
The course costs £18.50 and can be applied for through a doctor, Age Concern or the County Council.
