Through our door came a paper, Focus on Wootton Bassett, from the Liberal Democrats, in which it states that Coun Daphne Mathews had resigned from the council due to ill health, for which she has my sympathy.

But it does make me very angry that we now have to pay for another town council election a few months after the one in May. Coun Mathews, I seem to remember, was disqualified for failing to attend meetings on the old council due to ill health, and then stood again in May, only to resign a few weeks ago.

Surely it is irresponsible to saddle this town with a bill of around £3,000 for an election after such a short time?

Now I have heard of another resignation (Coun Amanda Dickson) which will mean another election and even more money wasted.

This together with all the pie in the sky suggestions for the St Ivel development along with talk of mud springs, and "Rowdy Dow walks" makes me wonder if we are living cloud cuckoo land.

Who will fund all this, the residents?

The town is not crying out, but weeping, for the car parking to be sorted out by the district council which has been like Nero, fiddling while we High Street shopkeepers tear our hair out at the chaos every day as the parking spaces are taken up not by shoppers, but used as a park and ride for Swindon.

Get the priorities right and Bassett will flourish. But do North Wilts care enough, or is there a hidden agenda for us to be swallowed up by the Best Borough in the Country?
