OPEN University graduate Vincent Osgood was recognised for his work at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Mr Osgood, who was awarded the MBE for his services to science, is not a scientist and admits his science background, "is a bit flaky".
But his work as a programme manager at the Swindon-based council is enabling scientists to make their discoveries more quickly. He is leading an e-science initiative, helping scientists to share their information and speed up research using high performance computing.
"I couldn't quite believe it when I got the letter saying I was being considered for the award," he said. "I haven't told my wife yet."
Mr Osgood, 53, of Stratton, worked for the Department of the Environment on a rural development programme and joined the research council in 1975 when it was based in London. He moved to Swindon with the council three years later.
