WOOTTON Bassett suffered a miserable 3-1 home defeat to bottom club Gloucester United.

Stuart Bellinger netted his first goal for the Rylands Way club but it was not enough to prevent United from collecting only their second win of the season.

Steve Jenkins blasted in a John Knight corner to put the visitors ahead on the half hour mark.

Gloucester's second came straight from kick-off at the start of the second period when stand-in keeper Mick Byrne was caught off his line by Tom Radcliffe's lob.

Bellinger brought Bassett back into the game three minutes later when he tapped in from six yards but Nathan Haisley sealed it for Gloucester three minutes from time.

Highworth's trip to Bishops Cleeve was postponed.

Purton stretched their lead in Division One West to three points after a straightforward 4-0 win at Cirencester United. Rich Saunders and Lee Curtis put the visitors two up at the break.

Further goals from Saunders and new signing Kenny Hawkins completed a comfortable afternoon's work for Alan Clark's championship chasers.

Understrength Shrivenham kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 home win over Cheltenham Saracens. Andy Rainer's 20-yarder five minutes before the break gave Alan Dyton's troops the lead. Cheltenham hit back on 70, but Michael Silvanus struck a superb long-range winner five minutes later.

Malmesbury took the lead at Winterbourne, before going down 2-1.

Fairford boss Mark Webb admitted football was of secondary importance after a neck injury to one of his players caused the club's home clash with Henley to be abandoned with just two minutes remaining.

The Cinder Lane side were leading 2-1 in the closing stages when defender Simon Gregory contested an ariel ball and landed on his head.

An ambulance arrived 20 minutes later but the decision was taken not to restart the game after Gregory had been taken to hospital with suspected vertebrae damage.

"There was only two minutes left but you've got to look at the conditions. It was lashing down with rain and freezing cold, the players hadn't had a chance to warm down and there was the risk of more injuries if we restarted.

"Simon is out of hospital now, they think it's vertebrae damage in his neck and he'll have to see a consultant."

Webb is waiting to hear if the league will order the fixture to be replayed.
