FORM went out of the window in this Boxing Day derby as Corsham suffered their first defeat in almost two months.

Calne had been misfiring in recent matches while Corsham had been the division's high-fliers with six wins and two draws in their previous eight games.

But the visitors were without a couple of key players and Calne took advantage to seal a morale boosting victory.

Calne boss Kelvin Highmore was pleased with his team's first win in five outings but warned his players not rest on their laurels in the wake of their derby triumph.

"In derby matches tactics and everything go out of the window," he said. "It's down to who wants it more and these games can be settled by a mistake sometimes. On the day I thought we were well motivated from start to finish and I was particularly happy we played for the full 90 minutes.

"Robbie Lardner took the game by the scruff of the neck. He controlled the game, scored a goal and was all over the place.

"Ben Highmore ran him close for man of the match. He hasn't been firing on all cylinders but on Saturday I thought he cause them problems and his pace scared them."

Against a strong wind Calne produced the first chance of the game when James Lye's free-kick was only partially cleared by goalkeeper Craig Chaplin.

The ball fell to Danny Jones and his 20-yard strike was headed off the line with Matt Pratley pulling the rebound wide.

Corsham then took a grip on the game playing with the wind at their backs. But they could not trouble goalkeeper Darryl Simms who was superbly protected by his defenders.

As the half progressed Calne began to look dangerous on the break and they took the lead on 27 minutes.

Ben Highmore raced onto Ben Moore's pass and beat his marker before cutting the ball back for Robbie Lardner to finish from eight yards out.

Corsham's response was swift and on 33 minutes the ever dangerous Frankie Coleman evaded two tackles and picked out Dave Kilmurray who shot wide from a tight angle.

Calne started the second half well and Lardner scuffed a shot wide from Matt Pratley's knock down in the 49th minute.

Highmore's side revelled with the wind behind them and on 68 minutes got the vital second goal of the game.

Moore powered through three challenges to the edge of the Corsham box and played in Highmore who flicked home a second from 15 yards.

The game was held up late on when Corsham's Matt Hobbs suffered a bad ankle knock. He had to be taken to hospital and Corsham were reduced to ten men in the process.

Corsham's ten men seemed to be spurred on by their disadvantage and with five minutes left Kilmurray found himself one on one with Simms but the goalkeeper did well to tip the ball over.

Two minutes later Kilmurray broke three down the wing and flashed a ball across the area where Geo Sperti just failed to apply the all-important final touch.

Now Highmore in turning his attentions back to solving his goalkeeping crisis. Steve Hale had to step into the breach at Larkhall two weeks ago because regular Darryl Simms was unavailable through work commitments and reserve Julian Crouch was out with a broken arm.

Simms was back between the sticks for the Corsham game on Boxing Day but Highmore is now looking to sign on a new shot-stopper. We have made a seven-day-approach for Melksham's Dave Hunt," said Highmore.

"We tried to get him last season but he chose Melksham. He played in a friendly against us and had a good game and we saw him at Pewsey where he had a blinder. I've spoken to Darryl Simms and he says he will being going to Ilfracombe this weekend.

"But logically Darryl Simms' work commitments mean he won't always be available and Julian Crouch is in plaster for another six weeks.

"We still have a goalkeeping dilemma. But I can't see Dave Hunt's move to us as being a problem because he's not been playing for Melksham this season."

Saturday sees Calne travel to whipping boys Ilfracombe who have won just twice in 19 outings this season. Highmore has no new injury worries ahead of the clash which kicks-off at 2.15pm because of floodlight problems.

"Ilfracombe is a banana skin for us," he said. "We go down there looking to win but it won't be easy in the rain and wind coming down on the hill.

"We've got the Corsham game behind us now and we need to take things on. We are playing teams around us now and are only four points below Corsham so a couple of wins could see us up into the top six."

Calne face Highworth Town on Tuiesday in the Wiltshire Senior Cup.
