WESTBURY United striker Toby Colbourne signed for Dr Martens League side Clevedon Town on a non-contract basis this week and admitted he has a point prove.

The move will give the striker another chance to prove that he has the ability to play at a higher level after he failed to make an impression at Salisbury City earlier this season.

Colbourne left Westbury for Salisbury at the end of last season but in his two and a half month spell there he only had 20 minutes of action and when it became clear he was not in their plans he moved back to Westbury, via a short spell at Frome Town.

Since returning to Meadow Lane in September Colbourne has bagged 15 goals in 18 appearances and is now determined to show he can make the grade.

He said: "This is a big chance for me. When it all went wrong at Salisbury I felt that maybe my chance of playing higher league football had gone.

"I feel that I have a point to prove to myself. I am confident that I can do a job for Clevedon but obviously it is now up to me to prove it."

The striker made his debut for Clevedon in their 2-1 win at Taunton on Saturday, capping an impressive performance by scoring the winning goal.

He was expecting to be involved in yesterday's match at home to Cirencester and to be in the squad for tomorrow's match at Yate Town.

He said: "I felt quite comfortable playing for Clevedon. In many respects I found it easier playing at that level than I did playing for Westbury.

"It is a much more controlled game and because of this it allows me more time get a breather in, whereas at Westbury the game was very quick.

"I came off the pitch with a lot of knocks on Saturday but that is my own fault because of the style I play."

He continued: "The nicest thing about this is that Clevedon know what they are getting. When I went to Salisbury it was all down to me going training there.

"Clevedon have had me watched a number of times and it has been after watching me play that they decided to sign me.

"They have told me they are looking for someone to battle for them up front and take a few knocks. Basically they want someone to hold the ball up for them."

Colbourne signed off from Westbury with both goals in Friday's 2-1 win at Shrewton and he believes United can go to enjoy a successful season.

He said: "I played for Westbury on Boxing Day even though I was playing for Clevedon the next day because they have been brilliant to me.

"Westbury manager Derek Graham actually advised me to accept the offer because like he said you don't get many chances like this.

"I do feel a bit bad about the timing of the move because now Westbury have only got the league to concentrate on and look as though they could finish in the top three. My departure will disrupt them a bit but hopefully they will cope.

"I always enjoy playing football for Westbury United and if things don't work out at Clevedon in the next couple of weeks I would have no hesitation in returning there."

Clevedon currently sit in midtable in the Dr Martens League Western Division and Colbourne is aiming to fire them up into the top six.
