AMENDED plans for a new art school at Marlborough College have been met with approval by the town council planning committee.

It raised no objection to the school's original plans submitted in August to demolish the Victorian music school in Bridewell Street and replace it with the new art school.

The music school building was never completed and ended up being used as a hall.

The new building will join onto the college's existing art gallery, The Mount House, on Bridewell Street.

There was some concern about the impact the proposed building with a curved glass front would have on the setting, which is part of the town's conservation area.

Some councillors took the view that such a modern building would detract from its historic setting, particularly as it would be at one of the main entrances to the town centre.

Other councillors were of the opinion that the design of the art school was exciting and would be seen as an example of early 21st century architecture.

After negotiations with Kennet District Council planning officers the school has submitted a modified design with the overall height of the building lowered by one metre.

The town councillors heard there were two letters of objection, one from the Civic Society and another from a neighbouring resident.

Coun Richard Allen was clearly not happy with the design, which he referred to as "Grange Hill coming to Marlborough.

"It looks like a Sixties secondary modern."

Deputy mayor Graham Francis said it was only to be expected that new art school would reflect modern design.
