CASTLE COMBE racing circuit near Chippenham has enjoyed another successful season to reinforce its status as a major force behind Wiltshire's economy.

Brilliant summer sunshine helped the circuit attract record crowds who generated an estimated £20m for the local economy.

The venue is a key attraction for visitors with thousands of fans attending the all-action race meetings, while its programme of action days, the racing driving school and giant car boot sales provide a steady source of income.

A spokesman said: "Castle Combe's headline event, the John Guest Speedfit Formula 3, attracted more than 25,000 fans again this season, keeping the circuit at the focus of international attention, and making it the envy of other UK motor sport venues who are reporting falling attendances.

"The crowds provided a valuable windfall for those who supply and deliver essential goods and services that the circuit needs to keep the hungry and thirsty race crowds happy.

"Then there is the wide range of craftsmen and traders who are among many local firms which count the race circuit as an important asset for their businesses."

Castle Combe also helps a range of other business, including local shops, filling stations, pubs and hotels, and is used for corporate and hospitality events.

The spokesman said: "Whether it is catering for the huge growth in corporate hospitality with firms entertaining guests at major race meetings, or providing facilities at the race circuit as an exciting venue for business meetings and seminars, Castle Combe plays a key role in the business life of Wiltshire."

But it is not only businesses who have benefited this year. Local charities and good causes have raised more than £10,000 from eight car boot sales, which are the largest of their kind in the south west.

Circuit chairman Howard Strawford said the team has made plans to make 2004 an even more successful year.

He said: "We are looking to generate more business within the terms of our good neighbour policy.

"We need to ensure Castle Combe circuit maintains its reputation as an internationally-respected motor sport venue while continuing to be a valuable asset both to the community, Wiltshire and the south west."
