FRUSTRATED residents in Warminster are still waiting for the companies behind a proposed mobile phone mast to name a new site for the project.

Telecomms giant Hutchison 3G had planned to build the mast on the old telephone exchange in East Street, which is owned by Crown Castle Ltd.

But after opposition from residents and MP Andrew Murrison as the site was in a conservation area and near to New Close Primary School, the company agreed to investigate alternatives to the town centre site in June.

More than six months on Hutchison 3G, which has been working alongside Crown Castle in the project, has yet to announce where the mast will go.

Campaign leader James Law-rence said: "I think Crown Castle and Hutchison 3G are going for the cheapest option. They are just trying to placate people with complimentary noises about other sites."

Hutchison 3G spokesman Mike Dobson said: "We have been conducting some research on several potential properties in the area. I'm hopeful that by the end of January we will have some news to share with the MP and residents. Building work is on hold until we find an alternative site."
