Ref. 27662-4A VOLUNTARY group that mediates between quarrelling neighbours has been saved from the chop thanks to a £5,000 cash windfall.

But the celebrations at Community Mediation Swindon will be short-lived unless more money is found in the next couple of months.

In November the Even-ing Advertiser told how the organisation, which has helped 180 disputes, was running out of funding and faced closure.

But now Zurich has stepped forward and saved the Old Town group at least for the time being.

Jacqueline Lloyd, project co-ordinator, said the money was a godsend. "We wouldn't have had any money to continue if this grant hadn't come through.

"It means we will be able to carry on for a few months. Zurich has said we will receive another £5,000 if we can get other organisations to match the funding. We have applied to other places for money and should find out in the next couple of months if we have been successful."

The service began nearly four years ago to help resolve problems, such as anti-social behaviour, between neighbours.

Mrs Lloyd, who has worked at the Victoria Road service for three-and-a-half years, hoped existing agreements with Swindon Council would be renewed in the New Year.

She said: "Environmental Health and the Housing Department buy a certain amount of hours from us, and we are hoping Wiltshire Police will renew their agreement. These agreements usually bring in about £9,000."

The money is needed to cover mediators' expenses, such as travel. Mrs Lloyd is the only paid worker at the organisation, but from January she will work on a voluntary basis until more money is found.

The group has 20 voluntary mediators across the town, who oversee discussions between neighbours.

The mediators are trained, impartial organisers who set up the meetings for neighbours to air their grievances and hopefully reach a solution. They do not offer advice but ensure meetings remain focused.

In 2000, Community Mediation Swindon received £200,000 of National Lottery funding to last three years.

Nicola Bryson, spokeswoman for Zurich, said: "This is part of Zurich's extensive programme of activity in the community and we are delighted to be able to help such a worthwhile cause."
