SWINDON'S Youth Empowerment Project has been awarded £10,000 from financial company Zurich.

It is run by Swindon's Baha'i religious group and managed from their office at the Health Hydro in Milton Road.

Project co-ordinator Heather O'Neill said: "The Swindon Youth Empowerment Project was set up in January 2001 to address the personal development needs of young people who are facing a range of challenges.

"These might include drug addiction, exclusion, behaviour issues and youngsters who are bullied. Our aim is to assist them to discover their amazing potential."

The project includes the use of the Tranquillity Zone, which opened five years ago and provides a relaxing environment with candles, flowers and soft furnishings.

The youth empowerment initiative has built on the success of the zone and has developed sessions that appeal to young people.

The project's manager Fidelma Meehan, said: "All of the young people who are referred to us have something in common, which is low self-esteem.

"This can stop these young people from coping with everyday problems and issues in their lives."
