Division 1 West leaders Purton had one of their hardest games for some time but ground out a 2-0 win over visitors Winterbourne United at the Red House.

Manager Alan Clarke had told his side to expect a tough game and he was proved right as the visitors had more than their share of the play in the opening exchanges.

Purton received a setback after 20 minutes when Toby Clarke dislocated his shoulder and was taken to hospital, but former Supermarine player Kenny Hughes came off the bench to fill in the midfield gap well.

Ten minutes before the interval and against the run of play, Purton took the lead when United keeper Tom Shepherd made a great stop from a Eurshall Fearon volley and the ball ran free to Lee Curtis who rammed the ball into the net.

After the break the visitors continued to have the edge but the home side grafted well and denied them any clear-cut chances.

Midway through the half, though, Curtis was again on hand to score a second and seal the game for the home side.

Purton Boss Alan Clarke was delighted with his side's efforts and said: "The lads were superb. It was not a pretty match and to be honest they had more of the play than us, but we stuck at it and ground out a result. Old Woodstock Town did us a favour too, beating one of our rivals Ross Town, so it was a good day.

"I can seeWinterbourne giving some of the other top side a hard game. I thought they played well and to my mind their keeper was the man of the match."

Wootton Bassett turned in one of their better performances of the season at Bishops Cleeve according to manager Pete Yeardley but they still failed to halt the home side's winning run going down 2-0.

Said Yeardley: "We have played worse and won.

"I was disappointed at the result but not the way the side played and thought we merited some sort of reward. We had plenty of possesion and looked good at times."

Honours were fairly even in the first half the home side snatching an advantage just before the break with a goal from Pete Moss.

Bassett pushed forward in the second half, Geoff Swatton having a goal disallowed and Stuart Bellinger going close before the visitors were caught on the break and Kevin Slack ran through to make sure of victory for the home side.

Fairford Town had their game abandoned for the second successive week when the floodlights failed after 55 minutes at North Leigh.

Last week their match at Cinder Lane came to an early end following an injury to Fairford defender Simon Gregory.

Fairford included new signing Phil Corcoran in their line-up but fell a goal behind after 10 minutes and despite plenty of effort had failed to cancel the goal out before the light failure brought a premature ending to the game.

Pewsey Vale in desperate need of points looked to have a good chance against Pegasus Juniors but the visitors eventually ran out winners 2-1.

Malmesbury Vics picked up a useful point in a 0-0 draw with Cheltenham Saracens.

Highworth Town and Shrivenham were without a game.
