MANAGERS at the SMASH youth project have renewed their appeal for volunteer mentors.

The charity needs 10 volunteers to help troubled youngsters turn their lives around.

Several people have come forward following last week's report about the appeal in the Evening Advertiser, but more volunteers are urgently needed.

Project manager Rebecca Rice said: "Since the article appeared, we have sent out four application packs, and although we are pleased we still need more people."

The mentors befriend the youngsters, and help them achieve a list of personal goals.

All volunteers have to attend a 12-week training course, which starts on Wednesday.

At present, only half of the 20 places are filled.

Sessions are held on Wednesdays between 7pm and 9pm at the SMASH centre at The Limes in Green Road, Stratton.

The volunteers are paired up with youngsters with similar interests, and meet up once a week.

SMASH has just learned that its lease at The Limes has been extended until 2006.

The charity now plans to spend £25,000 it received recently from the Home Office on modernising the building.

"The mentors find their roles extremely satisfying, as they can see how their young person develops.

"It can also provide valuable experience for anyone who wants to work with young people."
