ALEX Emery's interesting article about the new Patient Forums (PPI Forums) and the Patients Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) explained how local people will have new ways of influencing how the NHS works.
But she failed to mention a third new service, and yet another set of initials, which has been added to the jigsaw.
There are now independent complaints advocacy services (ICAS) available too. These can help people sort out difficulties with NHS complaints whether about an NHS hospital or community health service, a GP, NHS dental service or something similar provided through the NHS. All these new bodies should ensure peoples' rights are respected and the services received are good and get better.
ICAS for Swindon is currently provided by Citizens Advice from their bureau in Trowbridge. Older people and others who want to find out more about getting independent help to deal with an NHS complaint can contact ICAS on 0845 120 3782 or call me at Age Concern Swindon on 692166 for more information about how the new system works.
