REPAIRS have finally begun on a block of vandalised public toilets in Wootton Bassett.
As previously reported, North Wilts District Council awarded the town £6,000 at the start of December to carry out the repairs to the women's toilets in Station Road.
District councillor Chris Wannell has been fighting for the toilets to re-open since they were closed more than 18 months ago.
He said: "Finally they are taking action, but it has certainly been a long-time in coming.
"Wootton Bassett is trying to get more tourists into the area but it is not going to do that without the infrastructure in place. We need public toilets."
Coun Wannell said he was disappointed that the town was not given the full £15,000 needed to fully vandal-proof the block.
He added: "If you are going to do a job you need to see it through and do it properly, or the problems will come back."
