Ref. 28507-25A new firm has started in Swin-don which aims only to utilise the services of retired or semi-retired tradespeople.
Called, appropriately enough, Retired Trades Associates, the company hopes to clean up the market in an industry plagued by horror stories of unreturned calls, missed appointments and, as a result, wasted days off work for the customer.
According to Andrew Davidson who has set up the business, a franchise: "The market niche is quite clear. Our target audience is not being served with a reliable service.
"We have no intention of undercutting or alienating successful companies whose focus tends to be on larger scale works, but intend providing a valuable and complimentary service."
RTA was originally launched in Portsmouth just over 16 months ago and has recently gained recognition from Ports-mouth Trading Standards as a member of its Square Deal Initiative.
And while not all RTA tradesmen are retired or semi-retired, the emphasis is still very much upon using mature skilled tradesmen.
Explained Mr Davidson: "Fundamental skills like plumbing, carpentry and electrical expertise are disappearing fast. Every day another valuable tradesperson retires.
"But there skills are not being replaced by younger generations at the same rate.
"RTA provides those who have retired a continuing sense of worth."
The company has already recruited a number of retired craftspeople, ranging in age from 49 to 73, with skills ranging from those of general builders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, tilers, painters and decorators.
"All are self-employed and carry public liability cover," added Mr Davidson, "but we're always looking for additional recruits. "
