A police sergeant has undergone hospital tests after his hand was pricked with a used syringe during a drugs raid. The officer was part of a team of police carrying out a search warrant at a flat in Field View, Chippenham, on Tuesday afternoon, when the incident occurred.
He was taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon for blood tests. Details of how the officer came into contact with the syringe or his present condition have not yet been released.
A 19-year-old woman found in the flat was charged with possessing cannabis resin. A 29-year-old man, who was also at the premises, has not been charged.
Phil Davenport, branch chairman of the Wiltshire Police Federation, said: "For about the last 12 months, there have been new processes put in place to help officers who are affected by incidences like this.
"These processes include medical tests and checks at local hospitals for diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis.
"And if they are needed, this would also include treatment programmes.
"The force also has an occupational therapy unit which offers trained counsellors. The Police Federation will be making sure that all those medical and support options have been made available to this officer."
