KELVIN Highmore had called for his players to show him a response to their weekend defeat at strugglers Ilfracombe and that's exactly what he got and more.
Calne won through this second round clash against Hellenic League Highworth who are one division higher in the pyramid system.
But they had to battle back from 2-0 down and later 3-2 down with ten men before going on to win it in extra time.
Highmore praised his players' battling qualities and hopes the result can give them the confidence to get back on track in the league.
"We said before the game we knew Highworth were a good footballing so we should play direct and not try to match at their own game," the manager said. But we then tried to knock the ball around the halfway line and we got punished.
"They went two up with the penalty and then we suddenly woke up and started to play and scored two great goals.
"Highworth's third was a quality goal no complaints but although we went down to ten men I felt we played with the more positive formation.
"Once we equalised I felt we would go onto win it in extra time even with a man less. Then they had their goalkeeper sent off and I knew the game was ours for the taking."
Highworth had been in the driving seat for much of the match having gone 2-0 up inside 30 minutes.
Russell Byrne pounced on a stray pass on halfway and exchanged passes with Pete Macklin before rifling home on five minutes.
In the 26th minute Darren Smart was penalised for a foul on Macklin and Dave Webb slotted home the penalty.
Calne then sprung to life and drew level with two goals in five minutes. A long punt from debutant goalkeeper Dave Hunt was glanced on and Matt Pratley poked in.
Soon after James Lye went on a run and crossed for Ben Highmore to head the equaliser.
After the hour mark the pendulum swung back in Highworth's favour with Matt Dabal heading them in front and Calne's Matt Pratley being red-carded for catching Webb with a flailing arm. Calne's ten men battled on though and took the game into extra time with an 89th minute equaliser through Lardner.
The drama continued as Highworth goalkeeper Sean Purcell was dismissed for apparently throwing a water bottle at Lardner during the break between full time and the start of extra time.
Calne always looked the more threatening in extra time and goals from Highmore in the 99th minute and Glenn Armstrong on 115 minutes sealed their place in the next round.
