WOOTTON Bassett turned in one of their better performances of the season at Bishops Cleeve according to manager Pete Yeardley but they still failed to halt the home side's winning run going down 2-0.

Honours were fairly even in the first half the home side snatching an advantage just before the break with a goal from Pete Moss.

Bassett pushed forward in the second half, Geoff Swatton having a goal disallowed and Stuart Bellinger going close before the visitors were caught on the break and Kevin Slack ran through to make sure of victory.

Division One West leaders Purton ground out a 2-0 win over Winterbourne United at the Red House.

Purton received a setback after 20 minutes when Toby Clarke dislocated his shoulder and was taken to hospital, but former Supermarine player Kenny Hughes came off the bench to fill in the midfield gap well.

Ten minutes before the interval and against the run of play, Purton took the lead when United keeper Tom Shepherd made a great stop from a Eurshall Fearon volley and the ball ran free to Lee Curtis who rammed the ball into the net.

Midway through the second half Curtis was again on hand to seal the game for the home side.

Malmesbury Vics picked up their first point in seven games with a hard-fought goalless draw at Cheltenham.

In the opening minutes Andy Mitchell burst through the home defence but saw his shot saved by the keeper and the follow up cleared off the line.

As the half went on Malmesbury twice came close to taking the lead. First Lee Beavis drove a 20-yard free kick just wide and then Steve Baker could have done better when getting on the end of a free kick.

The second half was a rearguard action from Malmesbury. When Cheltenham were allowed a sight of goal Graham Jones proved up to the task with two fine saves. Malmesbury could even have snatched it when Colin Yates saw his inviting cross go straight across the six yard box.
