WILTSHIRE police have welcomed a fall in the number of positive drink-drive tests over the festive period but say they still have some way to go to convince motorists that drinking and driving is not acceptable.
Between 6am on December 16 and 6am on January 2, 281 drivers were breath-tested after being involved in crashes across the force area, and 12 were arrested. This is seven down on last year, or a reduction of 37 per cent.
The number of road accidents in which injuries were caused was down by seven, or nine per cent, from 81 to 74.
Wiltshire's road safety officer, Sgt Dave Melvin, said: "The reduction in the number of drivers arrested after road collisions is pleasing, as is the reduction in injury road collisions.
"However, the figure of 12 arrests supports our view that there is still work to be done by ourselves and other agencies to persuade some people not to drink and drive."
